SA VINYLS ASSOCIATION HIGHLIGHTS USE OF PVC IN ENERGY EFFICIENT BUILDINGS

The Southern African Vinyls Association (SAVA) has announced that it will be using its presence at this year’s annual Green Building Expo to promote and encourage the use of PVC in energy efficient buildings. The sixth annual Green Building Council SA Convention and Exhibition will be taking place at CTICC from 16-18 October 2013. PVC was first produced in a laboratory in 1872. It began to be produced commercially in the 1930s, when techniques for mixing it with plasticizers became known and PVC emerged as a substitute for rubber. During World War II, German scientists developed PVC pipe for water supply systems when material shortages limited conventional pipe supplies. “Today, PVC is by far the most common plastic used in the building and construction industries and has a wide range of applications, ranging from use in pipes to wire sheathing, flooring and weather-stripping”, says SAVA Chief Executive Officer, Delanie Bezuidenhout.... Confessions of a Greenpeace Drop-out - Book by Dr Patrick Moore

"Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout - The making of a sensible environmentalist" is Dr Patrick Moore's engaging firsthand account of his many years spent as the ultimate Greenpeace insider, a co-founder and leader in the organisation's top committee. Moore explains why, 15 years after co-founding it, he left Greenpeace to establish a more sensible, sciencebased approach to environmentalism. This is a must-read for everyone in the PVC and related industries as he deals with chlorine and vinyl in much depth. As an introduction into his book you can download pages 314 - 322 from the SAVA website... After reading these few pages, I am sure you will definitely purchase this book! I have just finished reading it and have learned a lot about being a "sensible environmentalist"!

SAVA takes action against competition regarding contraventions of the Advertising Code

We take our role as representative body for the PVC industry very seriously and endeavour to always fulfil an active role in the sustainability of the industry. With the support of our members we are able to addresses PVC related issues and constructively engage with stakeholders and role players to create a positive environment for a vibrant and sustainable PVC industry. To this effect we received a request from one of our members in July 2012 for assistance related to convertors in the Polyolefin industry making unsubstantiated/false/misleading claims about PVC Cling Film. SAVA did an initial investigation and found that there were possible contraventions of the Advertising Standards Code in both companies’ advertising material (websites & brochures). We communicated with other SAVA members impacted by these actions and decided to refer the matter to Adams & Adams for legal advice. Attached you will find a summary of the process followed by Adams & Adams and we are proud to announce that both companies has since either completely disabled their website, or removed their product brochure from the market! SAVA will continue to monitor both companies on behalf of our members. We want to also make use of this opportunity to invite our members to actively engage with the SAVA office on matters of concern!
